Laura Cooper

Hello, my name is Laura, I am a neurodiversity affirming therapist. I am a PTUK certified Play and Creative Arts Therapist and Certified Autplay Therapy Provider based in Shrewsbury.

I provide one-to-one and group Play Therapy in schools across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin. I am also able to accept private referrals thanks to having a dedicated play therapy space at my home. This is set in several acres of countryside next to a nature reserve allowing for a tranquil setting for children to engage in play therapy in a relaxed and natural environment. I also have three friendly resident ponies that will always give children a warm welcome especially for a carrot.

Before qualifying as a play therapist, I worked as a teaching assistant. For over a decade I spent a lot of time working with children to support their mental health and wellbeing.  Seeing the increasing need for tailored mental health support in school, I started training as a councillor earning a level 3 in counselling skills qualification. However, I found it wasn’t quite the right fit for me or the children I was supporting. During this time I came across Play Therapy and after graduating from Leeds Beckett University I have never looked back.

I have found Play Therapy combined neatly with my background in art. I completed a BA (hons) in Fine Art in 2008 and find creativity a great way of understanding our feelings and expressing ourselves.

I believe that all children can benefit from play and I am always amazed at the deep emotional connection that play therapy allows. Seeing children engage with their emotions at their own pace using the tools they want unlocks and offers all children a greater chance of understanding what they are feeling and why.
